Chabeel

Chabeel also known as Kachi Lassi is a beautiful sweetened summer drink offered by the devout in remembrance of and as a tribute to the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru who compiled the first edition of the Adi Granth which later took its present shape as the holy Guru Granth Sahib was captured by the Muslim barbarian Jahangir in 1606 and tortured in the most heinous manner wherein he was made to sit on a red – hot plate in the blistering heat while hot sand was poured over him!

Guru Arjan Dev Ji stoically bore the cruelty (some historical records say that he was tortured for five days wherein he was also dipped in boiling water and subjected to unmentionable sadistic acts) and was a picture of bliss.

He was then allowed to take a dip in the Ravi River and as he walked into the waters, his blisters were on display for all to see. He turned to his supporters and said his last words to them. He took a dip in the holy Ravi and disappeared into the universe right in front of their eyes! This day is celebrated as Shaheedi Diwas.

The deeper meaning of the chabeel is to face the challenges and obstacles that come one’s way with self – confidence and faith in the Guru.

The chabeel is prepared from milk, water and rose syrup (and a dash of kewra for fragrance). In a large mixing bowl, add milk (20 percent), rose syrup and water (80 percent). Mix well so that the colour is consistent. Add ice cubes at the end.

This chilled drink is perfect for the scorching summer, improves digestion and promotes hydration.
