One of the most important kharif crops of Uttarakhand is black soybean cultivated for centuries by small and marginal farmers under rainfed conditions using organic farming techniques. Known locally as kala bhat (or kaala bhatt), this economically valuable crop has played an important role in providing the necessary nutritional, medical and food security for thousands of people in this Himalayan state.
Kala Bhat is grown along with a total of twelve crops comprising of millets, beans, pulses and cereals on narrow patches of terraced land. This traditional system has proven to be very effective in improving soil fertility, increasing productivity and preventing soil erosion. Kala Bhat is used to prepare a variety of local dishes because of its medicinal and curative properties.
Kala Bhat is rich in flavones, isoflavones, protein, antioxidants, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, fiber and Vitamin B 6, B 9, K and E. It is highly recommended to treat cardiac ailments, jaundice, high blood pressure and diabetes, inhibit the growth of cancerous cells, promote blood circulation, strengthen bones and facilitate weight loss.
This inexpensive legume thrives in the loamy soil, high altitudes, cool winters and hot summers of Uttarakhand and is an excellent source of oil and protein for man and animals.
Kala Bhat received the Geographical Indication Tag (GI) in 2023.
