Ancient Mound, Mugalpur Village, Uklana Tehsil, Hisar District, Haryana

The remote village of Mugalpur in Uklana Mandi took the spotlight after incredible archaeological discoveries in 2020. Uklana town itself is a repository of Harappan culture and is closely associated with the Vedic Period and the various tribes.

The ancient mound is approximately 70 – 80 acres in area and largely holds artefacts from the 3rd century BCE – 4th century CE period. Painted shards of ceramic and pots along with brick – built structures as well as terracotta figurines, toys, wheels, animal seals, idols of deities, beads, stones for sharpening weapons, bangles and balls among others belonging to the Harappan civilization and Maurya, Gupta and Kushan periods have been an astounding revelation.

The archaeologists have discovered walls made of Kushan period bricks, a well – laid out terracotta ring well of the Mauryan and Kushan period and a planned city of sorts that is yet to be explored in entirety.

Coins of successive Muslim butchers like the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals have also been found.

Extensive archaeological excavations are still pending and will probably reveal the socio – economic practices of the people who lived here about 5,000 years ago in due course of time.
