Phool Bawadi, Chhoti Khatu, Nagaur District, Rajasthan

Rajasthan is dotted with innumerable stepwells that offer a glimpse into the religious and social practices, cultural traditions and customs and art and architecture of that period. Though a fair number of these have either fallen into a state of disrepair or disuse, there is a spirited movement across the state by several heritage enthusiasts to extensively clean, repair and restore these ancient structures to their former splendour.

One such stepwell that has been immaculately maintained though unused as of now is the centuries – old Phool Bawadi at Chhoti Khatu. Chhoti Khatu is a city of immense spiritual and religious importance during the Mahabharat period. In fact, locals have said that many stepwells built in this area are from the 10th century BCE onwards!

Phool Bawadi has been designed with remarkable precision as per the tenets of the auspicious Shilpa Shastra. Believed to have been constructed by the Gurjara – Pratiharas in perhaps the late 8th century, this structure has a harmonious infusion of decoration, simplicity, scientific calculation and spiritual potency.

The stepwell is built entirely underground owing to the prevailing climatic conditions and is at least 30 feet deep if not more. It is accessed by a flight of steps that takes you to the lower levels.

The layout comprises of the typical kutas and ardhakutas alternating each other with niches at the landing space. These niches are richly embellished with beautiful carvings, decorated panels, brackets and sculptures.
