Bharatiya Jnana Parampara (Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)) / Vedic Sciences – Kusha Grass

Kusho-asmi darbha-jaatinaam

– Bhagawan Shree Krishna, Srimad Bhagavad Maha Purana (11th Canto, 16th Chapter, Shloka 30).

The humble kusha found growing in the wild is believed to be the purest entity in the universe, an epitome of the Supreme Self. The kusha is the greatest sanctifier, untainted by sin and wrongdoing as per the Hindu scriptures.

Since the ancient days, the Rishis have revealed the importance of the kusha in Vedic rites and rituals and for Realization of the Self in their authoritative texts. The kusha was the chosen seat by the Rishis for tapas (penance and austerities) as its inherent nature that of sublime bliss helped to dispel delusion, destroy ignorance, abandon attachment, develop discrimination, dispassion and detachment, maintain equanimity and attain the knowledge of the Supreme Self.

Meditating while seated on the kusha mat is said to help one experience the Supreme Self seated in one’s Heart Lotus, improve one’s concentration, stabilize one’s physical, mental and emotional health and overcome stress, sorrow, rage, anger and trauma.

The health benefits of meditating on the kusha grass are immense and too long to list – prevent the formation of cancerous cells, treat high BP, diabetes, hormonal imbalance, cardiological and pulmonary ailments and improve one’s immunity among others.
